Abstract:

Thallo is a two-pronged platform: a mobile application and an in-classroom product supply kit. The mobile app provides menstrual health education through courses with videos and articles by medical professionals, as well as discussion board where users can connect with others, ask questions, and get advice. The supply kit allows schools to make period products readily available and visible without students having to leave, hide, or be embarrassed. The kit functions as a shelf that adheres to the wall by the door, and contains supplies students can pick up when leaving.

Trend Research

Competitive Analysis

After researching what menstrual health products for young teenagers were on the market, I found there to be a lack of affordable products that focused on comprehensive access to education and products in schools.

Many brands offer either period products or period education tools and both are often at a high cost.

Initial Concept

Branding

Before developing the concept further, brand guidelines were established to create a strong identity and vision for the project. Doing so helped to focus on the users and gave a clear direction for the user interface and mockups.

User Testing
Key Findings

The order of videos, then discussions, then articles in a course was confusing to users.

The order was changed to videos, then articles, then an overall discussion for the entire course.

People weren’t always sure what the navigation icons meant and sometimes had trouble locating a page.

Labels were added to the icons in the navigation to improve clarity.

Users enjoyed the process of adding to the discussion board: “It made me so excited!”

Users found the language to be appropriate for young teenagers without sounding too childish or too mature.

The App

The mobile app provides education through courses with videos and articles by medical professionals. Each course has a discussion board where users can connect with others, ask questions, and get advice. These courses include topics such as period fundamentals and pain management. The app also features a questions page where users can ask questions and get dependable answers from medical professionals, not only providing reliable information but also showing users that others have the same questions.

The Kit

Business Model

Thallo Kits are sold to public schools at a very low cost, made possible by companies looking to boost their brand image by donating funds and supplies.

company donations + low cost of sales = funding for thallo

The kit functions as a shelf that adheres to the wall by the door, and contains supplies students can pick up when leaving. Including the kit in the classroom environment increases awareness and reduces stigma around periods, and ensures that any student needing a product has access without going to a specific bathroom.

Reflection

User testing was extremely helpful in perfecting the user flows and user journeys.

I learned how to tell an impactful and emotional story through a commercial.

I challenged myself to create a unique design system and visual language for the brand.
